The Awesome Place that is Manila

By Helena Walker

With its combination of modern facilities and traditional Filipino hospitality, Manila has always been a favored destination for travelers. Whether for business or pleasure, the city has something to offer to you. As the capital of the Philippines, it also acts as a gateway to some of the top vacation and adventure spots in the world. Now, cheap flights to Manila make it easier for you to access the wonders offered by the Pearl of the Orient.

Sights, sounds and other sensations
Manila refers to two distinct but integrated entities: the original city that is the capital of the Philippines, and metro area that bears that city's name. Metro Manila is home to 15 to 20 million people. It is the cultural, educational, entertainment, business, spiritual, and political capital of the Philippines. It is also home to the regional head offices of many multinational companies, non-governmental organizations, and branches of the United Nations. People with flights to Manila will find themselves in a cosmopolitan city that has all the conveniences of modern living while staying true to the hospitable nature of Filipinos.

Manila is a city that never seems to sleep. While the morning streets are filled with the hustle and bustle of a modern city, evenings and even the early hours of the morning see the same streets still filled with people enjoying the nightlife. Malls - including some of the biggest in the region - bars and restaurants can be found everywhere in Metro Manila. For those with a more cultured taste, museums, theaters, and concert halls also abound, chief of which is the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

For a metropolis as highly urbanized as Manila, it has large patches of green. Rizal Park, named after national hero Jose Rizal, is one of the biggest and most accessible. Quezon City has a wildlife center with a lake right at its heart. Even the malls try to incorporate park-like areas in their design, like with the upscale Greenbelt in the Makati Central Business District.

Gateway to more fun
The Philippines is home to many of the top vacation and adventure destinations in the world, like Boracay with its world-famous white sand beaches, the summer capital of the country that is Baguio, and natural wonders like Palawan's underground river. Getting to these places is easy from Manila.

The chocolate-colored hills and Tarsier sanctuaries of Bohol, the waves of La Union and the UNESCO Heritage sites of Batanes are all two hours away from Manila. Davao, with its eagle sanctuary, pearl farm, and the exotic durian or historic Cebu are easily accessible from the airports and harbors of Manila.

Many vacation spots are also accessible by car, van, or bus for those with flights to Manila. Tagaytay, with its volcano-within-a-lake or mystic Mount Banahaw are a few hours' drive from the metropolis. The former US bases of Clark and Subic, that now host several world-class hotels and recreational facilities, are two or three hours' away by car.

These are just some of the places you can go to from Manila. As they say, it is more fun in the Philippines, and with cheap flights to Manila, fun is more accessible than ever.
