Cameron Highlands, Malaysia



The three towns in Cameron Highlands are Ringlet, Tanah Rata and Brinchang. From Tapah in the lowlands, Ringlet is the first town that you reach in the Camerons. About 13 km north of Ringlet is Tanah Rata and a further 4 km is the town of Brinchang. All the three towns are small in area and you can practically walk from one end of the town to the other in 10-15 minutes.

Ringlet is the hub of vegetable farming and flower cultivation in Cameron Highlands. The town is not on the tourist map catering mainly to the farming community in the area with its trading stores selling agriculture supplies and basic necessities. At 1,200 metres above sea level, Ringlet is not as cool compared to Tanah Rata and Brinchang located on higher elevations above 1,800 metres.

Tanah Rata
The name "tanah rata" means flat ground in Malay referring to the relatively flat area on which the town is located in this hilly region. Tanah Rata is the largest town in Cameron Highlands and the location of the region's district (administrative) council and main hospital. There is a taxi station and bus terminal in Tanah Rata and therefore easy to get around to other parts of Cameron Highlands from here. Furthermore, the town has a good selection of local and western eateries, backpacker inns and other budget accommodation.

Taxis in Brinchang

Brinchang is the second town in Cameron Highlands after Tanah Rata. The town is more touristy and has a big town atmosphere compared to Tanah Rata. There is plenty of accommodation here including hotels and inns as well as dining options. Most of the shopping in Cameron Highlands is in Brinchang and one of its main attraction is the lively night market held on weekends. Being a popular tourist destination, Brinchang gets crowded during the weekends, public holidays and the school holidays.
