Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi is a duty-free island, offering an attractive range of local and imported products cheaper than the rest of Malaysia. Duty-free items in Langkawi include liquor, cigarettes, chocolates, consumer electronics, clothes, shoes, bags, kitchenware and clothing. Beyond the sought after duty-free items, Langkawi also offers local handicrafts, batik and souvenirs. Shop around before buying and the main shopping destinations are Kuah Town, Pantai Cenang and Padang Matsirat including the airport, though the airport is probably the most expensive place to buy anything.

Duty-free shopping

Pantai Cenang
Besides the numerous restaurants and cafes, there are the small shops and stalls along the beach road of Pantai Cenang. There is not much in terms of the typical duty-free items here except at the Zon Duty-Free Shopping Complex housed at Underwater World. Major items sold here include handicrafts, batik prints and shirts, souvenirs and beachwear. Every Thursday night there is the Temoyong Night Market offering cheap local foods, fresh produce and clothes.

Padang Matsirat
Padang Matsirat does not offer much in terms of duty-free shopping, which is confined to the airport and the Teow Soon Huat Shopping Centre (more than 50 retailers here). Go to the batik factory at Atma Alam Batik Village at Jalan Padang Matsirat for authentic handmade batik clothes and prints. The stalls along the roadside of Kampung Raja offers souvenirs, batiks, decorative items and brick bracks at bargain prices though not of the best quality.
