Getting Around

One of the best ways to sight see Georgetown is to walk especially in the area around Penang Road, Weld Quay and the Esplanade. You can also get around the popular beach resort of Batu Ferringhi on foot. Remember to  wear light clothing, start early in the morning and put on sun-block during the day. Riding on a three-wheeled pedicab or trishaw is a great idea for a pleasant tour of Georgetown. Negotiate the fare before getting on a trishaw and advisable to hire them by the hour for extended sightseeing.

Car Rentals & Taxis

Renting a car is a viable option if you are planning to get off the beaten track and explore the western or southern coast of the island. You can find car rental companies located at Penang International Airport, in Georgetown and Batu Ferringhi. Take note that Penang Island has quite a number of one-way streets and narrow roads. Many Penangites ride motorbikes and a minority often disregard pedestrians, cars and even their own lives when on the streets. Taxis are equipped with meters but most drivers are reluctant to use them. Therefore, haggle with the taxi driver and agree on a price beforehand. You may want to avoid being on the streets during the rush hours between 7.30-9.30 a.m. and 5.30-7.30 p.m.
