Champasak Province


Champasak Province is located in southwestern Laos bordering Thailand in the west and Cambodia in the south. It is a rural province with just around 600,000 people living in an area measuring 15,415 sq km (5,952 sq miles). You can reach the province from Thailand at the Chong Meng border crossing entering into Vang Tao and from here a highway leads to the town of Pakse.

Pakse is the capital of Champasak province and third largest city in Laos, though its population is only around 80,000. It is the gateway to the region served by a national highway and regional airport.

With the same name as the province, the small town of Champasak comprises of just a few buildings on the west bank of the Mekong River. From here it is less than 10 km to the ruins of Wat Phu.

Wat Phu dates back to the 5th century during the Chenla and Champa Empire. However, the ruins seen today is a Khmer temple complex built from the 11th to 13th centuries.
