Walking through Chinatown
Chinatown makes a great destination for an interesting walk through Singapore, away from the towering skyscrapers and
modern shopping malls. Suggested walking streets in Chinatown include Temple Street, Ayer Tawar and Tanjung Pagar occupied 2-3 storey old shophouses. Many of these building were built during the British colonial era in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Except for the modern vehicles passing through the streets, you can't help feeling being lost in time.

Temple Street by Terence Ong

The heart of Singapore's Chinatown is situated around the Chinatown MRT Station. A touristy and over commercialised area of Chinatown but yet a lively (livelier in the evening) and interesting place to be in. There is a street market targeting tourists searching for the typical cheap souvenirs and gifts to take back home. As evening approaches, Smith Street transforms into an open air dining area with street stalls serving a mind boggling variety of Chinese dishes. Pay notice to the rows of small shops situated in the old shophouses selling traditional items such as Chinese meat floss, cakes and "dubious" looking antiques.
