Getting In

By Train

Singapore is the southern terminal of the Malaysian-owned Malayan Railway (KTMB) network. There are two day trains (Ekspres Sinaran Pagi and Ekspres Rakyat) and a sleeper service (Ekspres Senandung Malam) from KL Sentral in Kuala Lumpur. There are the day train (Senandung Timuran) and sleeper (Sinaran Timur) departing daily from Tumpat (northeastern state of Kelantan), passing south through the "Jungle Railway" and finally reaching Singapore. The trains are clean and fairly efficient but slower than the buses.

Crossing the Border
The small colonial-era railway station in Tanjong Pagar at the southern edge of Singapore's Central Business District (CBD) closed in June 2011. All KTMB trains now arrive and depart at the Woodlands Train Checkpoint in Singapore.
  • From Malaysia to Singapore - Malaysian immigration checks are carried out on board the trains at the Johor Bahru station, and then the trains heads to Woodlands where Singapore immigration and customs are located.
  • From Singapore to Malaysia - Both Malaysian and Singaporean immigration formalities are conducted at the Woodlands Checkpoint. Initially with Singapore immigration and then Malaysian immigration and customs.

Train Tickets
KTMB tickets purchased in Singapore are charged in dollars, while those bought in Malaysia are charged in ringgit at a 1:1 rate. Thus a ticket which costs RM10 in Malaysia will cost $10 if bought in Singapore - you pay more than double if purchased in Singapore! There are ways to avoid paying double:

  • Book your tickets as return tickets from Malaysia. For example, Kuala Lumpur-Singapore-Kuala Lumpur tickets will be charged at the ringgit rate.
  • If leaving Singapore, you can cross the border by bus or train and then purchase and board the train at Johor Bahru.
Though you can book your tickets at the stations, you can book online at KTMB's web-site but has to be done 48 hours in advance.
