Beach Bumming Tour

A frank confession by South-East Asian standards, Singapore's beaches aren't all that great. But other options within easy day-tripping distance from Singapore aren't that much better. So if you have precisely one day to spare, your best choice is to head to Sentosa, Singapore's island getaway. Bring along a bathing suit, sunscreen and towel if you plan to laze on the beach and take a dip!

Approximate cost per person for admissions and transport to Sentosa is SGD50. In case you intend to spend the entire day on Sentosa Island, it makes sense to purchase a Day Play Pass which allows you to use 16 attractions (including to & fro cable ride) plus some McDonalds food coupons. The Play Pass rates vary from the pricier weekend and public holiday rates and cheaper weekday rates. The Play Pass can be used only between 9 am to 7 pm.

Sentosa Island by SGTOSA

Start by finding your way to HarbourFront, the southern terminus of the MRT North-East Line. Then follow the signs towards the cable car and purchase a return ticket - SGD29 for adults and SGD18 for children, including admission into Sentosa. The crossing takes around six minutes and gives good opportunities to gawk at the Port of Singapore and the massive Star cruise ships below. The cable car will drop you off at the center of Sentosa Island. History buffs may wish to drop into Images of Singapore nearby for a sanitised, kid-friendly version of Singapore's history. The Sky Tower and Merlion don't really have much to offer - you've already seen the views from the cable car.

Hop onto a Blue or Green Line bus and head one stop to Underwater World (SGD26 for adults and SGD18 for children). This is the best of Sentosa's attractions, a giant aquarium packed with sharks, manta rays and all sorts of wonderful sea creatures. Next door is Fort Siloso, once a British colonial-era fort and today where you are introduced to life as a soldier of the British Empire. You are taken through various well presented exhibits covering Singapore during World War II.
