Marina Bay, Singapore

Merlion at Marina Bay

Marina Bay is Singapore's newest district, created on reclaimed land just south of the Riverside. The label "Marina Bay" is a little fuzzy. Technically, it's the body of water created by reclaiming land around the mouth of the Singapore River and blocked off from the sea by the Marina Barrage. However, Singaporeans associate the name "Marina" with the Marina Square shopping mall and the many hotel developments around it on the north shore of the Singapore River.

Marina Bay was planned as an integrated hotel, entertainment, commercial and residential district in Singapore. Supposedly a lively area of Singapore but everything here seems so expensive! Billed as major attractions include the Marina Bay Sands (casino and hotel), Suntec City (huge multi-purpose complex), Singapore Flyer (giant ferris wheel) and the Merlion (statue of a mythical creature). A 3.5 km waterfront promenade links the Marina Centre, Collyer Quay and Bayfront areas. A walk along the promenade offers a scenic view of Marina Bay and a pleasant stroll, passing the Mist Walk and water jets sprouting into the air.

Transportation to Marina Bay remains a little disjointed. The northern half is best accessed through the shiny new Circle Line MRT, which has stations at Esplanade (Suntec City) and Promenade (Millenia). You can also walk for 15 minutes through the underground CityLink shopping mall from Raffles City. Getting to the southern half, the Marina Bay Sands (integrated resort) is directly served by the Bayfront MRT Station and buses 97, 106 or 133. The same buses also serve the Marina Bay MRT Station. From the airport, Marina Bay Sands hotel guests can use a 24-hour shuttle bus for free but others need to pay SGD25 (nearly the same price as a taxi).
