Orchard Road, Singapore

Orchard Road and neighbouring Scotts Road form Singapore's premier shopping district, with several kilometers of road lined on both sides by practically nothing but shopping malls. The latest round of frantic upgrading in 2008-2010 has seen half a dozen new malls open up and the rest renovated in an attempt to catch up. Many malls here participate in the annual Great Singapore Sale organised by Singapore's Tourism Boar. During this period, street events and late night shopping (till 11:00 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays) are held at several malls.

While most malls in Orchard are distinctly upmarket, there are one or two that still cater to the average Singaporean wallets and tourists searching for bargains. The following are some of the major shopping malls along Orchard Road and Scotts Road.

Lucky Plaza
304 Orchard Rd.
The c
amera and electronics stores (street level floor) here are legendary for ripoffs and poor customer service - best avoided unless you really know your stuff. However, there's more to the mall and you can find cheap souvenirs (2nd floor), low priced beauty salons and off-season designer perfumes and cosmetics (most floors). There is also a cheap yet surprisingly good food court in the basement.

Ngee Ann City/Takashimaya Shopping Centre
391 Orchard Rd.
This is where the tai-tais (wealthy ladies of leisure) hang out. The mall features expensive branded goods on the first floors but more affordable shopping in the two basement floors. Also features Kinokuniya, a Japanese chain and largest bookstore in Southeast Asia's (situated on the 3rd floor).

Ngee Ann City

313@Somerset
313 Orchard Rd (near Somerset MRT Station).
313@somerset is directly linked to the Somerset MRT Station and features a concentration of mid-range retail outlets. Retail options include local and global fashion labels including Zara, Uniqlo, New Look, Esprit and the Forever 21 flagship store spanning 4 floors. There are also some popular dining options including a cluster of restaurants and lounges.

Far East Plaza
14 Scotts Rd.
Frequented mostly by teenagers and is a bargain hunter's paradise but slowly creeping upmarket. Retail outlets include fashion, accessories, jewellery, watches, cameras, consumer electronics, cosmetics, sports apparel and many more. There are also plenty of reasonably priced restaurants and cafes serving local and western fares.

ION Orchard
2 Orchard Turn (near Orchard MRT Station).
This is one of the larger shopping malls in Orchard Road, extending four floors both above and under ground. While the spacey, pulsating, neon-lit facade is dominated by high-street flagships for Louis Vuitton, the interior has plenty of more affordable options including Japanese retailers Uniqlo and Muji. The fourth floor has the ION Art gallery, while the fourth floor of the basement has a food court - bit pricey by Singapore standards but enormously very popular.
