Riverside

The Singapore River stretches for about three kilometres from the mouth of the Singapore River to its original source inland at Kim Seng Bridge. The mouth of the mouth of the river was once part of Singapore's old port and the river was the commercial lifeblood of the island from the early 19th century and into the mid-20th century. During its heyday, sailing vessels of various kinds including bumboats, lighters and Chinese tongkangs crowded the Singapore River. Today, the river is part of the Marina Reservoir after damming the river's mouth to create a freshwater reservoir.

Today, the banks of the Singapore River (known as Riverside) forms a central artery of Singapore's densely packed Central Business District (CBD). The north bank is where Stamford Raffles originally landed and founded Singapore as a British colony in 1819. To this day many central government buildings can be found in the area. The newer south bank, laden with skyscrapers, is where Singapore's bankers make (or break) their fortunes. Unless you're a shopping maven intent on maximizing time in Orchard Road's shopping malls, the hotels on the riverside are among the best places to stay in Singapore.

Riverside is best accessed by the MRT Raffles Place (North-South/East-West Lines) and Clarke Quay (North-East Line) Stations. There is no convenient MRT station for the western end of the river and you'll have to hike on foot for 15 minutes to get to the eastern end. Riverside makes for a fine walk, offering some great views of Singapore. It can get quite hot during the day with evenings being cooler and breezier, and the night skyline is equally attractive. A popular way to travel along the river is to take the Singapore River Cruises. Stations are scattered along both banks of the river and reservations are not necessary.
