Ao Nang, Thailand

Ao Nang is a tourist town by the coast and the centre of tourism in Krabi Province. Besides the beaches, reasons for staying here include Ao Nang's vibrant nightlife, plenty of shops, wide range of good eating options and an ideal location for exploring Krabi including island hopping. Though a touristy town it is not as frenzied as Phuket or Pattaya but still a lively place to be.

Therefore, it is not surprising to find most of the hotels and guesthouses in Krabi Province are located in Ao Nang. Accommodations here range from the budget stays for backpackers to the upscale resort-style hotels. Though staying here is cheap by Western standards, you can find cheaper accommodation in Krabi Town (the capital of Krabi Province) about 20 km away to the inland. However, Krabi Town is a dreary place and not fully developed to meet the conveniences of the tourists. Anyway, you can always take a ride on a songthaew from Ao Nang for a short visit to Krabi Town and back.

Most of the activities in Ao Nang are concentrated along the town's beachfront road. The area is a convenient location if you prefer to stay here with nearby shops, banks, restaurants, travel agents and longtail boats taking tourists to Rail Leh Beach and the off-shore islands. As expected, accommodations here are somewhat overpriced (especially during the high tourist season) but many prefer to stay here for the convenience. You can find plenty of cheaper and often better accommodations away from the beachfront road. Head north on Moo 2 and you can find several hotels and guesthouses. Another are the upscale resorts and mid-priced bungalows at Moo 3.
