Ao Nang, Thailand

Ao Nang Beach by kallerna

Ao Nang is a small resort town but a popular beach destination (in Krabi Province) located about 950 km south of Bangkok. The resort town is formally known as Ao Phra Nang ("Princess Bay") though everybody uses the short form Ao Nang. The town was originally a backpacker hotspot but now gradually moving upmarket and is the most "Westernised" beach resort in Krabi Province as the airport brings in higher flyers.

While Ao Nang is not quite as scenic as nearby Rai Leh, there is a good range of cheap accommodation, good restaurants, easy transport and travel agencies. Thus, Ao Nang makes a good base for exploring Krabi Province. Orienting yourself in Ao Nang is easy - almost everything is located along the beach (running west-east) and along the Airport Road (Highway 4203) which goes up north from the east end of the beach. The main beach is Ao Nang Beach, used by sunbathers to a certain extent but there are large numbers of longtail boats offering access from here to other beaches on the mainland and at nearby islands.

Ao Nang by Mr Bullitt

Long-tail boats arrive on Ao Nang Beach near the junction of the two main roads. These boats account for the high level of noise-pollution caused by the endless chain of boat motors and during high season the noise is substantial. As long as tourists keep increasing, the problem will continue to worsen and detract the beauty of this beach. A problem caused by the rising number of tourists during high season is the unrecycled sewage carried directly into the sea. This is responsible for the occasional bad smell.
