Dining Western

Western-style restaurants are not only popular with Western tourists and expats but also with the local Thais seeking a change from the Thai fare. You can find varieties of Western restaurants in Chiang Mai and some operated by expats. These establishments include Italian, American, French, German, Mexican, Spanish and British restaurants. Then there are the chain establishments including McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut and Starbucks.

Budget Eats

  • Mike's Hamburger Stand, corner of Chaiyapoom Rd and Changmoi Rd - Brightly-lit with just stools and a counter in an open shop.
  • Woody's Fine Fast Food, 56 Chaiyapoom Rd (next to 7/11 near Spicy Nightclub) - Offers kebabs, burgers, hot dogs, falafel and chips. Free WiFi is available. Stays open when most restaurants close. 

Mid-Range Restaurants

  • Mong Pearl Cafe, Huay Kaew Rd - A favourite with Westerners because of the great service, good English, nice aesthetics and delicious food and drinks.
  • Amazing Sandwich, 20/2 Huay Kaew Rd - Choose any of the ingredients on their list and they'll build a sandwich for you exactly how you like it. They also serve breakfasts and have bagels.
  • Chiangmai Saloon, 30 Ratchawithi Rd - Serves American-styled burgers and steak. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, music videos, sports on three 10-foot screens, pool tables and free internet, free popcorn and peanuts.
  • El Toro Restaurant, 5/2 Loi Kroh Rd - Mexican-style food prepared by experienced cook. Specialties include Mexican rice, Chicken chimichangas, chicken fajitas and chicken flautas.
  • La Fourchette, 62/2 Prapoklao Rd (opposite Wat Chedi Luang in the center of the old city) - Bistro-style French restaurant and offers a large selection of imported meats. Romantic open-air seating with an upstairs art gallery.
  • Red Lion, 123 Loi Kroh Rd - Serves international and Thai food. Favourites include Bangers 'n' Mash, Fish 'n' Chips, steaks, pies and pasta.
  • The Dukes, 49/4-5 Chiang Mai-Lumpoon Rd (South of the Narawat Bridge) - Excellent American-style dishes and desserts including ribs, burgers, pizza and cheesecake. No loud music or entertainment, just good food.
  • The Olde Bell, 25/1 Loi Kroh Rd (next to the Raming Lodge Hotel - Modern British cuisine and Indian curries. British and Continental Cheese boards are a speciality of the house.

Upscale Restaurants

  • Alois Bavarian Restaurant, Phrapoklao Rd, Soi 8 - Small restaurant specialising in Bavarian (German) food with choices of sausages as well as roast beef and dumplings.
  • Arcobaleno Italian Restaurant, 60 Keaw Nawarat Rd, Soi 1 (in front of Watket Temple) -  Serves a range of traditional Italian soups, pasta, antipasti, meat and vegetarian dishes.
  • Piccola Roma Palace Italian Restaurant, corner of Charoenprathet Rd and Sri Donchai Rd - Italian restaurant, opens for lunch and dinner amid beautiful surroundings.
