Chiang Mai International Airport (about 3 km from the city centre) handles both domestic and international (regional) flights. Airport taxis charge a flat 120 baht for up to 5 passengers to anywhere in the city. A metered taxi starts from 40 baht plus a 50 baht service fee from the metered taxi counter. Alternatively, Bus No. 4 travels from the airport to the city for 15 baht. Many hotels and some upmarket guesthouses offer cheap or free pick-up/drop-off services.

Domestic Flights
The route between airports in Bangkok and Chiang is one of the busiest in Thailand.

  • Thai Airways flies daily almost every hour with additional flights during the peak tourist season. Other Thai Airways flight between Chiang Mai include Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Khon Kaen, Koh Samui, Krabi, Phuket, Surat Thani, Ubon Ratchathani and Ubon Thani. Other domestic flights are mainly operated by Thailand's budget airlines.
  • Air Asia is a well-known Asian low-cost airline with flights to Chiang Mai from Bangkok (Don Muang Airport), Phuket, Hat Yai, Ubon Ratchathani and Ubon Thani.  Usually it's cheapest if you book well in advance (at least a week before) but prices can be significantly higher if you book just a few days before or want a specific day or flight. There are other charges including fees for luggage, food and seat reservation.
  • Bangkok Airways has flights to Chiang Mai from Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi Airport), Koh Samui, Trat, Krabi and Phuket. In many cases Bangkok Airways has the cheapest fares compared to other budget airlines, particularly if you book just one day or a few days ahead.
  • Nok Air has flights from Bangkok (Don Muang Airport), Mae Hong Son, Udon Thani, Mae Sot and Hat Yai. Nok Air only allows bookings of up to 3 months in advance.
  • Nok Mini (formerly SGA Airlines) operates flights to Chiang Mai from Bangkok (Don Muang Airport), Mae Hong Son, Mae Sot, Hat Yai and Udon Thani.
