It borders the country of Laos in the northeast, Cambodia in the southeast, Myanmar (Burma) in the northwest and Malaysia to the south. Thailand is equipped with modern amenities and accommodation in the country range from the beach front backpacker bungalows to some of the best luxury hotels in the world. Despite the heavy flow of tourism and western influences, Thailand retains its quintessential Thai identity. The country's carefree people are famed for their smiles and fun-seeking "sanuk" lifestyle. Many travellers coming here eventually extend their stay in Thailand well beyond their original plans and others never find a reason to leave.

Downside
Nevertheless, Thailand has its downsides including growing pains of a transforming economy from an agriculture to industrial and technology-based economy. As a result more Thais are leaving their villages to live and work in the cities, increasing the burden on the urban infrastructure. Agricultural workers are lucky to earn 100 baht per day while the nouveau riche in Bangkok (Thailand's capital) cruise in their luxury cars. Bangkok is notorious for its traffic jams and over development has wrecked the once-beautiful coastal cities of Pattaya and Phuket. In the heavily touristed areas, scamming tourists have become an art.
