Koh Samui, Thailand

With an estimated 60,000 rooms, accommodation should not be a problem in Koh Samui. The most difficult decision will be picking a suitable beach. If you're into nightlife, Chaweng and Lamai are definitely the places to go. If you're in for a quieter beach experience, try finding accommodation at Mae Nam or the South Coast. Choeng Mon is a good choice if you're looking for a quiet hideaway retreat. A good compromise between lively Chaweng and the quieter destinations is BophutNathon is in the central part of the island and a popular shopping and dining destination on the island.

Chaweng is the heart of Koh Samui and the largest beach resort on the island. The once abundant backpacker bungalows and hostels are virtually non-existent and have been replaced with newer, more modern and obviously more expensive tourist orientated hotels. Be aware that the nightclub district is not far from many of the good beach hotels, which tend to be on the north half of Chaweng. This is fantastic if that is what you want on your holiday but not suitable for the quieter more romantic holiday.

Lamai is the second largest beach resort in Koh Samui after Chaweng and d
uring peak season, some places may be full. It is less bustling than Chaweng but lively enough if that is what you want. Accommodation here is generally cheaper than in Chaweng but development of tourist facilities has made many places here becoming more expensive. However, cheap rooms can still be found if you do a little searching.

Choeng Mon
Choeng Mon is made up of a series of small bays featuring white sandy beaches. The beaches here are quiet and clean, perfect for a laid back holiday. Accommodations are generally spacious and most hotels feature swimming pools. Budget stays start around 700 baht for a small fan beach bungalow, about 30 metres from the beach.

Bophut is a charming beach village located on the northern coast of Koh Samui and about 15 minutes away by taxi from Koh Samui Airport. The area is quieter than Chaweng or Lamai but Bophut has nevertheless experienced a boom in new luxury hotels and guesthouses. However, there are still plenty of mid-priced options available in Lamai.
