Bang Thao (Laguna) Beach

Bang Thao is a large open bay with one of Phuket's longest beaches. The area was once used for tin mining but has since transformed and developed into a 6 km stretch of luxury resorts and villas. Most of it is occupied by the Laguna Phuket Resorts & Villa complex, a massive five-hotel development with a golf course. There are, however, accommodations available outside the Laguna complex at the bay's south end.

The Laguna complex in Bang Thao is about 25 minutes from Phuket Airport and transfers can be arranged for about 600 baht. A metered taxi cost around 300 baht. Getting around Laguna is fairly easy and free. There are free shuttle buses between all the hotels and shopping centre as well as a ferry service around the lagoon. Leaving Laguna for other places in Phuket is expensive as few Phuket taxis travel to this complex. Chauffeured cars are available but cost around 600 baht each way to Patong or Phuket town.

The Laguna complex is all about relaxation. All of the hotels have swimming pools and there are a variety of spa facilities at the hotels. All the hotels have private areas of the beach with lounge and towel service. The beaches are not patrolled but do have roped-off swimming areas. Some of the resorts have sailing and rowing boats for use on the lagoon. Banyan Tree has a championship golf course which can be used by residents of all of the hotels in the Laguna complex. Tours can be booked through the hotels to visit many of the major attractions in Phuket.

The Laguna complex has a large number of shops but all are expensive - much better deals can be found elsewhere in Thailand. The complex has a large number of very good but expensive restaurants. You can charge your bill from any of the restaurants in the complex to your room irrespective of which hotel you are staying. There are some cheaper hawker-style restaurants on the beach which must be paid for in cash. If you want nightlife or shopping, you can get a taxi to Patong Beach, about 20 minutes away.
