Kata

Kata is divided into two bays i.e. Kata Yai (Kata Beach) and Kata Noi, two adjacent beaches on the west coast of Phuket, directly south of Karon Beach. The beaches of Kata are a scenic gem with its clear water flanked by hills and picturesque view of the nearby Pu Island. The area retains a village feel at its northern and southern ends and considered a family-oriented destination in Phuket.

Kata Beach comprises of two areas i.e. Kata Centre located at the northern end of the beach (near Karon Beach) and Kata South where many of the resorts are located. There are more hotels than meet the eye and walking around for a couple of days you will find even more guest houses. This does not mean that Kata Beach is packed with tall hotels and definitely more peaceful than PatongSituated less than 1 km south of Kata Yai is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with fewer hotels and less development - the beach is here superb. To get to Kata Noi, take the narrow beach road up over the hill from Kata Yai.

The beaches of Kata offer safe swimming and does not have any drop-offs, making it safe for children and non-swimmers. However, always take notice of the flags that fly, they will let you know if it is safe to swim. There is a coral reef on the right hand side of Kata Beach that goes out to Pu Island. Sitting on the beach and looking right you may see local fishermen on the rocks trying to catch their supper. There is a great shallow snorkeling and diving location on the north side of the bay at Kata Beach. Information and equipment are available from several dive centers in Kata.

The local Thai market in Kata is on Thursdays and situated just off the main road. Here you will find locals buying their fish, spices and an asssortment of foodstuffs - a very interesting place to visit for the first time traveller to Thailand. In the centre of Kata you can find several shops selling tourist gift items. There is also a small shopping area called KT Plaza (next to Black Canyon Coffee) selling souvenirs and apparel. Restaurants are well priced here and there is a a good selection of cuisine including Thai, Indian, Scandinavian and Italian.
