Getting In

By Bus

Hanoi is the transport hub for long-distance buses serving Vietnam's northern region. There are several bus stations or terminals serving the city, with each station serving a particular area. Besides being connected to major cities and towns in Vietnam, there are also international buses departing from Savannakhet and Vientiane (Laos), Phnom Penh (Cambodia) and Nanning (China). The transport system is fairly organised but best to purchase at least a day in advance to ensure yourself a seat.

You can purchase tickets directly from the ticket counters at the bus stations in the respective cities or towns. Some cities may have travel agents and even some hotels and hostels (acting as agents) may also sell tickets i.e. if you prefer the convenience and willing to pay extra purchasing from an agent. However, beware of scams and some buses may be old and considered not roadworthy by international standards.
