Hanoi, Vietnam

Getting In

By Plane

Most visitors to Northern Vietnam arrive at the Noi Bai International Airport, located about 35 km (45-60 minutes) north of Hanoi. The airport might seem relatively small (compared to the airports at Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang) considering Hanoi's importance as the country's capital, but this might benefit travellers by making the airport easy to navigate. Furthermore, there is no need to arrive hours in advance because the limited waiting space is one reason why non-travellers are discouraged from entering the airport.

Taxis from the Airport
Taxis can be hired from Noi Bai Airport to Hanoi and there are fixed price taxis right outside the exit offering fares for around USD16. These are provided by various taxi companies and are slightly more expensive than the tout taxis but you pre-pay for the trip, so there are no hassles about the fare. Some drivers may insist to take you to a hotel of their choice to collect a commission, but if you are specific about your destination they usually give in. To be sure, have the address of your destination.

Non fixed-price taxi agents will quote prices ranging USD15-30. Be sure you have a price agreement with the agent and taxi driver before getting into the car, as the price quoted by the agent may not be what the driver is expecting. The prevailing rate is around 330,000 dong. There are a few official looking tourist information booths inside the arrival hall, offering rides into the city for USD25-35. If you have already booked a hotel, some hotels will dispatch a driver upon request and put the fare to your room bill.
